The Mouse that Got Away at Midnight

Last week the cats caught another mouse, or should I say they found a toy and alerted us to the fact that there was a mouse in the house? We managed to get it and kill it and then the trap under the stove caught another one. If you are grossed out already I suggested that you stop reading now. Saturday night we were blissfully enjoying our slumber when suddenly awakened by a frantic scurry which could only mean another mouse. I suggested to Drew that he get up to check it out to confirm the diagnosis. It was indeed a mouse and he found it in the jaws of one of the cats in the living room. Great job kitty! Only problem is that as soon as kitty saw Drew, she dropped the mouse and it wasn't dead and scurried away. The chase was on. I got up to get on the gloves and Drew armed himself with our weapon of choice in these cases - a broom. THe trick is to put the broom on top of the mouse while I put a plastic baggie over the mouse and tie it up so Drew can take it outside and whack it against the wall to make sure it dies. Hey, I warned you to stop reading didn't I? Well, as soon as it got under the broom it learned to fly. Who knew mice could fly? This sucker was flying through the air and made Drew jump. It was a sight to see him in his panties, I tell ya. I hightailed it to the couch. SO, we continued to chase the mouse under the couch, pulled out the couch, under the tv, behind the bookcase, pulled out the bookcase and behind the prayer bench - me, Drew, Pink PInk, and Emily all trying fercoiusly to get this little squeeking mouse. And squeek it did. So much so that I had to call upstairs for reinforcements. THey never did answer despite the 2 messages I left. It's good to know you can count on NOBODY in an emergency! Finally around midnight - about 45 minutes after our chase began, our little friend made it into Leo's rain boot. Shhhh, don't tell Leo.

On a side note, if you wonder why on earth we are trying to catch the mouse, it's because if we leave it up to the cats, they just get it and make it bleed and believe me, it's not fun to clean up. Oh, and please don't share any of this with my parents because they are coming here next week. Good thing they won't be sleeping on an air mattress on the floor. They'll be upstairs where the mice don't seem to go.

With the mouse in boot and us tired from the chase, I had a brilliant idea. I thought it was brilliant at least. I would just throw the boot outside and let the mouse go for the night so I could get some slumber. SO, I tossed out the boot quick as I could so the little mouse didn't try to fly away suddenly, and out it went. Unfortunately, my idea was't so brilliant because out went the cat after the mouse - in the rain, up the stairs. Now we were chasing the cat. I finally did get her inside and considered it a loss. I'm sure the mouse will be back.

I laid in my bed trying to sleep afterwards with visions of mice in my head. I was so grossed out that I was unable to sleep. The injustice in all of it! What on earth did I do to deserve this?! What will people think?! Why can't anyone help us out here?!

Chewing Gum

Today Leo had choir rehearsal and locked himself in the bathroom because he didn't want to go. He has not really embraced choir the way we hoped but he did stick it out for the year as we asked. He has decided not to audition for next year. He instead wants to be in the scouts or take cooking classes. In any case, he has one more Wednesday night rehearsal and then 2 mroe concerts and he's done. We decided to take him to McDonalds today after rehearsal and since it was a beautiful day we took the subway and ended up walking a few blocks to McDonalds. This is the conversation that took place:
"Mom, what are all these black dots on teh sidewalk?"
"Which ones?"
"These ones here and all over the place."
"Oh, that's gum."
"Ew, why would someone chew black gum?"

Threes

I'm either Orthodox or crazy because today at the store I bought 3 avocados, 3 tomatoes, 3 potatoes, and 2 bananas and I got all freaked out that maybe I should have gotten one more banana.

Earth Day

Pretty much I like Earth Day is all a bunch of politically correct who- ha. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad day or there shouldn't be a day we think about our earth but I think most companies use it to get on people's good side. Obviously my son's school is one of them. He knew about Earth Day as he kept asking me how many days until Earth Day and counting down so he must have heard something about it at school. When I asked him if they did anything special he was thoroughly disappointed. He figured they would have gone out and picked up trash or something. He then proceeded to tell Drew that when he grows up he wants to be a garbage man so that he can help the earth. Thatta boy! What a vocational goal! He asked Drew if they could start picking up trash in the park on the way to school. Drew is less than thrilled about this prospect.

Easter

I think we may have made it through our first Holy Week although its not over yet. Drew was at church from 7-12 on Thursday and Friday night. He got home Friday night only to have to wake again at 5 am and leave. He didn't return until 4 pm. I haven't really seen him since Tuesday night and he's only working p/t! Since it was just the kids and I today we slept in for one. Then they headed out to go garage saling with aunt Paige while I had a chance to clean the house. Then I just sat on the couch and listened to the silence. This is actually one of my favorite things to do. LOL I love it when my house is clean and its quiet. Weird huh? After they got home Leo went to a friends house to play for a few hours and Mazie and I headed out in search of ribbons and candles for church tonight. We love Michael's! We played some basketball outside on the new hoop that Jason installed and we all had a nap in preparation for tonight. I'm feeling worn out already but there's more. After dinner we dyed Easter eggs for the first time. I can't believe I didn't get a picture! I did video tape it though but I'm not sure if you can show videos on here. I'm new at this. I had forgotten just how beautiful Easter eggs are! I had so much fun. I learned a few things too. I learned that the kits are useless. After dying 24 eggs in various colors the kids were tired of dying eggs and not interested in painting, glittering, stickering, stenciling, or whatever else comes in those lame kits. Good thing they weren't interested anyway since most of it didn't work. Since it was still early and Drew had left to go back to church again, I figured I would brave it and try to do Ressurection cookies. if you haven't done it before, google it. It's pretty fun. At least it was some structured time for the kids. Too bad they were too tired by this point. They've had their baths, it's 9:30 and I'm waiting to leave at 11:00 or so to go to church. I hope nobody's hair catches on fire and I hope it doesn't rain since we are walking around outside tonight. I am glad to be Diaconysa Kathy however because I get reserved seating in the front. How cool is that?!
Now to be sure to fill the baskets and hide the eggs. I hope this can get done soon without the kids seeing since I don't anticipate being home until 1 or 2 am. Do you think the kids will sleep in tomorrow? I hope so.

The First Day of the Rest of My Life

Our Yahoo blog wasn't really working out so well so I did some research and decided to switch it up. Welcome! I really wasn't sure if I would even continue a blog but was encouraged to do so by my husband so I did. Perhaps I'll let him be a guest blogger from time to time. I spend my entire time at work online in front of a computer screen and really would prefer to be out hiking rather than blogging. My eyes are starting to hurt and I wonder what all this radiation or whatever comes out of this screen is doing to my body. But, alas, I am stuck for the time being so I might as well do something useful like create a blog, right? I feel inundated by technology as I am sure some of you can relate. I've got 4 email accounts, a facebook account, a blog, and about 5 remote controls. Luckily I don't yet own a cell phone. I've been trying to resist for years. I owned one way back when I was living in California. It has a huge klunker of a thing and I hated that anyone could get in contact with me at anytime. I also had a pager and was paged at all times so right now I enjoy my freedom. I hope to get a second car before getting a cell phone actually. In reality I'd like to stick with one car. It makes more sense financially for sure and is also greener but with our hectic schedules it seems inevitable. Oh how I yearn for the slow life sipping iced tea on the front porch. Not that I've ever done that or anything.

I'm glad you are here. I'll work on trying to make my site all artsy and such and try to add some pictures as well but give me some time okay?
